The Furman Paladins “Lunch & Learn” series presented by Sharonview Federal Credit Union continues on Tuesday, October 13, at noon and will feature Furman cross country/track and field coaches Robert and Rita Gary, who are in their ninth year with the Paladins.
A two-time Olympian in the Steeplechase in 1996 and 2004, Robert Gary has led the Furman cross country teams to seven-consecutive Southern Conference titles on both the men’s and women’s sides. Under his direction, the Paladin men have placed among the top 26 in three of the last five NCAA Cross Country Championships, including a 13th-place finish in 2015 and a 14th-place finish last season. The 2019 Furman Lyles Alley Coach of the Year, Gary has established himself as a one of the nation’s elite coaches through his involvement with USA Track and Field, where he most recently served as the head men’s coach for Team USA at the 2019 IAAF World Championship.
The 2018 USTFCCCA Southeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year, Rita Gary has led the Furman women’s team to unprecedented heights. The Paladin women placed second at the 2019 Southeast Region Championship, tying the highest regional finish in the history of the Furman women’s program, and placed four women on the all-region team. The Furman women entered the NCAA Championships ranked 15th but went on to score a ninth-place finish, marking the Paladins’ second top-nine finish in three years. On the national scene, she served as the Team USA women’s coach for the 2020 Pan Am Cross Country Championship in February.
Furman Paladins Lunch & Learn, which is accessible via Zoom, a remote conferencing service, is an interactive forum that assists in the dissemination of information while providing coaches, staff, and other special guests an opportunity to ask/answer questions regarding Furman Athletics.
Conceived to help Furman Athletics remain connected to its loyal fans, Lunch & Learn has featured director of athletics Jason Donnelly, men’s basketball coach Bob Richey, head football coach Clay Hendrix, women’s head coach Jackie Carson, and NFL veteran Dakota Dozier ‘14 over the last five weeks. Dan Scott will serve as program host.
