On Tuesday, Jan. 29, the Furman English Department will sponsor an event celebration Joseph Vaughn ’65, the university’s first African-American student, organized by student Adare Smith ’20. Vaughn’s first day of class was Jan. 29, 1965, and to commemorate the occasion students will lead a walk from Furman Hall, Suite 100, to the James B. Duke Library steps. Following some brief remarks there will be a pizza party and planning session for future celebrations in the library’s Pitts Room.
