Distinguished Irish playwright Friel is noted for his clever and thoughtful reimagining of Anton Chekhov’s wonderful plays. In “The Bear,” Friel adapts Chekhov’s play of the same name with modern sensibilities. A boorish landowner visits with comic and unexpected results.

“Friel’s ‘The Bear’ is superbly funny, vivid and keenly alert to Chekhov’s modern sensitivities to gender issues…” — The Daily Telegraph.

In “Afterplay,” Friel revisits two characters from separate Chekhov plays (“Uncle Vanya” and “Three Sisters”). He has them meet in a run-down Moscow café and their lives become intertwined in a charming way.

“Friel’s audacious Chekhovian epilogue is short, masterful and hilarious…prior knowledge of Chekhov is neither assumed nor required.” — The Guardian.
