This year Furman enrolled 64 students seeking to become the first in their immediate family to graduate with a bachelor’s degree. You can help welcome them by participating in the First-Gen First Friday program.
On the first Friday of classes as well as each month this fall, we’re encouraging faculty and staff to wear t-shirts in support of first-generation students. The Center for Inclusive Communities is providing shirts to faculty and staff who are first-generation college graduates themselves (commonly defined as neither parent/caregiver earned a four-year degree) and those who are not first-gen but still want to show their support. The shirts are the same design as last year. If you previously received a shirt, feel free to pick up a replacement if needed. We’ve also distributed t-shirts to our incoming students who are first-gen as well as our new student organization the First-Generation Student Alliance. And we’re celebrating being named a “First Scholars” campus by the national Center for First-Generation Student Success.
The free shirts will be distributed on a first-come basis; please email firstname.lastname@example.org with size, type (first-gen or ally), and campus mailing address. We hope you will join your colleagues in wearing them. The first semester is critical to the retention of all our incoming students. We hope this effort will signal to our first-generation students that others like them have been successful in college and provide encouragement during their time of transition.
First-Gen First Friday Dates (wear the shirt):
- August 21
- September 4
- October 2
