CLP-Matthew Baumgardner Cubes Reception

December 6, 2019 @ 6:00 pm

The Furman University Art Department and Furman University Libraries will host an opening reception on December 6th to celebrate an exhibition of sculpture and painting by Matthew Baumgardner. The event will begin at 6 p.m. and take place in the Special Collections gallery of the James B. Duke Library.

The exhibition was organized by students enrolled in ART 281: Curatorial Issues and Practice, a course taught by art historian, Dr. Sarah Archino. The exhibition features art by the visual artist Matthew Baumgardner, who passed away last year, with a special focus on his Cube sculptures. This event will present a selection of his Cubes, along with paintings and studio artifacts that showcase Baumgardner’s process and provide an introduction to his career.

The opening will be free and open to the public; the gallery is located on the 2nd floor of the Duke Library. This event will also be part of the University’s Cultural Life Program. The exhibition will be on view through March 2020. The Special Collection gallery is open Monday-Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, or by appointment.

In the coming weeks, works by Baumgardner will be featured in the main display cases in the Roe Art Building, forming an auxiliary exhibition. The Roe Art building is open to the public between 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. For more information please contact
