CLP: Furman Symphony Orchestra in concert

February 23, 2018 @ 8:00 pm

The Furman Symphony Orchestra (FSO) will present a concert Friday, Feb. 23, at 8 p.m. in McAlister Auditorium on campus. The Sound Quality Concert Series event is presented by the Furman Department of Music. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors, and $5 for students/youth.

A pre-concert lecture about composer Dmitri Shostakovich will be led by Furman’s Laura Kennedy, renowned Shostakovich scholar. Her talk takes place 7 p.m. in Room D-104 of the Daniel Music Building.

With the 75-member-strong FSO, conducted by Furman’s Thomas Joiner, guest faculty artists Derek Parsons (piano) and Gary Malvern (trumpet) present the music of John Williams, Shostakovich and Beethoven. The program includes Williams’ instantly recognizable “The Mission” (the theme from NBC News); Concerto No. 1 for Piano, Trumpet, & Strings, Op. 35 by Shostakovich; and one of the most famous classical pieces ever written, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67.
