The 2016-2017 Charles H. Townes Lecture Series in Faith and Reason will begin with guest lectures from Dr. Christian Smith, the William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of Sociology at the University of Notre Dame.
“Why Scientists Playing Amateur Atheology Fail”
Do natural and social scientists have the capacity to make claims about the existence of God, the meaning of the universe, or other metaphysical positions? Can science prove or disprove religious beliefs? Is atheism more scientific that belief in God? This lecture examines the capabilities and limits of scientific authority to help us know what we can and cannot rationally believe about possible religious truths.
The lecture is held in Shaw Hall at the Melvin and Dollie Younts Conference Center. Reception and book signing to follow the lecture.
The lecture is free and open to the public.
