Black troops who served in the Civil War could get Congressional medal

In a story in The New York Times, Holly Pinheiro, assistant professor of history and a specialist in the Black experience in the military from 1850 through the 1930s, described some of the struggles faced by Black veterans of the Civil War. He also said women, including Harriet Tubman, “were always integral to the war effort” as nurses, spies and scouts.
