Greenville area faith communities are doing their part to shore up a dearth in affordable housing in the Upstate by selling off and/or developing their unused property for single-family homes. A report by Angelia Davis of The Greenville News cites statistics from a 2019 multi-disciplinary study by Furman University and commissioned by United Way. Combining qualitative and quantitative metrics, the study revealed that real median income in Greenville declined 5.3%, while rent costs soared 24% from 1990-2016. The study also highlighted how, as Greenville grows, poverty and gentrification follow suit. Among many other news agencies, the Associated Press and Charlotte’s News & Observer ran the story.
