The registration deadline to join the Cothran Center for Vocational Reflection in reading “The Power of Meaning: Finding Fulfillment in a World Obsessed With Happiness” by Emily Esfahani Smith is Wednesday, May 27. The book club will meet from 4-5 p.m. May 31, June 14, June 28 and July 12, and participants are asked to commit to all four sessions.

“As we considered options, I watched Smith’s TED Talk and was quickly intrigued,” Whitney Brown, the Cothran Center’s program coordinator for alumni and community initiatives, said. “Her work focuses on the human experience and living lives of depth and significance – both extremely relevant topics during these uncertain times and in the work of The Cothran Center.”

Gatherings will occur via Zoom, with a private link to be provided upon registration prior to the first meeting. There will be opportunities for reflection, sharing and connection via both large and small group discussion.

Books are available in a variety of formats via Amazon.

“The cancellation of several traditional summer programs provided space for us to consider the summer of 2020 differently,” Brown said. “Conversations with my own friends, family and higher ed colleagues across the country, combined with feedback from Cothran Center colleagues, Furman alumni and students, generated a vision for an opportunity to slow down and intentionally create space for reflection and connection to others via a shared experience. The concept of the virtual book club emerged with the hope of providing that space.”
