Practicing community: The future of liberal learning

A 2018 publication by the Association of American Colleges & Universities, “Building a New Liberal Education,” spawned a working group at Furman University to discuss the future of liberal learning. Using the publication as a source document, colleagues across academic affairs, information technology and student life convened on several occasions to answer the publication’s calls to action. They used the meetings to also reflect on The Furman Advantage and its impact since its 2016 launch.

Heidi Bostic, visiting associate provost for special projects, and Diane Boyd, executive director of the Faculty Development Center at Furman, facilitated discussions in the working group they dubbed “The Future of Liberal Learning.” The two distilled the outcomes of those conversations in an article that was picked up by AAC&U, “Practicing Community: The Future of Liberal Learning.”
