Furman Singers on tour, closing concerts set for March 11 and 12

The Furman Singers will wrap up their annual spring tour with two concerts on the Furman University campus Monday, March 11, and Tuesday, March 12, at 8 p.m. in Daniel Memorial Chapel.

The concerts are open to the public and are presented by the Furman Department of Music. Tickets for the Sound Quality Series concerts are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors 60 and older, and $5 for students.

The Furman Singers will launch their tour Sunday, March 3, in Atlanta, where they will perform two concerts, the first during morning worship at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, and a 3:15 p.m. recital at The Cathedral of St. Philip.

On Monday, March 4, the Furman Singers will perform at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at 7:30 p.m. (Chattanooga, Tennessee); Tuesday, March 5, they will sing at 7 p.m. at First Baptist Church (Rome, Georgia); and will present an Ash Wednesday performance at 7 p.m. March 6 at First Presbyterian Church (Asheville, North Carolina).

The Furman Singers’ road concerts are free and open to the public.

Conducted by Hugh Ferguson Floyd, music professor and director of the Furman Singers, the 50-voice ensemble continues a tradition of performance over 70 years old. The Furman Singers perform a diverse program of sacred and secular music for a cappella choir and in combination with Furman’s commanding Fisk organ. The concert features the music of Anglican composers Benjamin Britten and Herbert Howells, classic works of Palestrina, Mozart, Brahms and Fauré, and a selection of African-American spirituals by widely-published composer William L. Dawson.

The Singers are accompanied by Furman music professor and university organist Charles Tompkins, and student pianist, Robert Cushing of Decatur, Georgia.

Founded in 1946 by DuPre Rhame, and conducted by Bingham Vick, Jr. from 1970-2010, the Furman Singers choir is recognized as one of America’s premier collegiate ensembles, touring annually throughout the East and the Southeast United States, performing for churches and schools and other public functions. Beginning in 1974, biennial summer concert tours abroad have taken the Furman Singers to many of the great churches and cathedrals of Europe.
