Help celebrate First-Gen First Friday program

On the first Friday of each month this fall, Furman is asking faculty and staff to wear T-shirts in support of first-generation students. The Center for Inclusive Communities is providing newly designed shirts to both faculty and staff who are first-generation college graduates (commonly defined as neither parent having earned a four-year degree) as well as faculty and staff who are not first-generation but want to show their support.

The next T-shirt distribution will take place Wednesday, Oct. 31, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Trone Student Center atrium.

“The first semester is critical to the retention of all our incoming students,” said Neil Jamerson, assistant vice president for student development. “We hope these T-shirts will signal to our first-generation students that others like them have been successful in college and provide encouragement during their time of transition.”

This year, Furman enrolled 101 students who are attempting to become the first in their immediate family to graduate with a baccalaureate degree,
