Furman gears up for Family Weekend

Family Weekend at Furman University gets underway this weekend, Sept. 28-30. The long-running tradition, which is expected to host around 2,000 guests, is loaded with events ranging from performances and sports to sessions about academic success and study away.

The events that are open to the public are offered below. See individual listings for costs.

Friday, Sept. 28
8 a.m.-6 p.m. Barnes & Noble at Furman
Pick up your Starbucks favorite and play board games in the Café! Outfit the entire family in Furman gear. From hoodies to socks, B&N has you covered!

9 a.m.-5 p.m. Special Collections and Archives exhibition
“Furman’s Legacy of Slavery: An Exhibition Based on the Work of the Slavery and Justice Task Force,” Second floor gallery, James B. Duke Library.

3:30 and 4:30 p.m. Timmons Planetarium
Come view the heavens from the comfort of the indoors. The Timmons Planetarium is located in Rinker Hall 253 in the Townes Science Center. For more information contact Dr. David Moffett via e-mail at david.moffett@furman.edu.

4 p.m. “Behind the Scenes in Special Collections and Archives”
In this one-hour program, see (and touch!) highlights from Furman’s archival and rare book collections, from medieval manuscripts to contemporary artists’ books. Special Collections and Archives, second floor, James B. Duke Library.

6-7:30 p.m. Artist’s reception with Matthew Wilt, “Simple Machines.” Roe Art Building.

6 p.m. Volleyball – Furman vs. Mercer
Alley Gym. Tickets available at the game, $5.

7 p.m. Women’s Soccer vs. Samford
Eugene E. Stone III Stadium. Tickets available at the game, $5.

8 p.m. Band Extravaganza
Under the direction of Furman’s Jay Bocook, the Paladin Regiment will perform the set list from the band’s 2018 Exhibition Show “British Invasion.” Tickets are $5, available at the door. McAlister Auditorium.

8:30-11 p.m. Family Outdoor Movie
“The Goonies” is the featured film for family movie night. Free to all. Concessions available. Lakeside Amphitheater.

Saturday, Sept. 29
8 a.m. 5K Fun Run/Walk
Sponsored by the Young Alumni Council, the run/walk follows a scenic course around Furman’s campus beginning at the Lay Physical Activities Center. Participants will receive a Fun Run gift. Prizes will be awarded. Registration fee is $25.

9-9:45 a.m. A Prospective Student’s Guide to Furman
This seminar is designed to guide students in grades 10-12 who are interested in attending Furman. An admission counselor will lead this presentation in the Presentation Room of the Hartness Welcome Center. Program will begin promptly at 9 a.m.

9 a.m.-5 p.m. Special Collections and Archives Open House and Exhibition
Stop by Special Collections and Archives to see historic Furman documents, rare books and more. Also on view: “Furman’s Legacy of Slavery: An Exhibition Based on the Work of the Slavery and Justice Task Force,” Second floor gallery, James B. Duke Library.

10 a.m.-6 p.m. Barnes & Noble at Furman
First 15 customers will receive a tall coffee from the Barnes & Noble Café. Show your Paladin Pride and pick up your Furman gear.

10 a.m.-1 p.m. Trolley Tours
Hop aboard the trolley at Daniel Chapel to experience a riding tour of Furman’s campus.

1 p.m. Football Pre-Game Show
Join Dan Scott, The Voice of the Paladins, with special guests, Sir Paladin, and the Furman Cheerleaders adjacent to the Paladin Club Tailgate Zone.

1 p.m. Champions Walk from Pearce Horton Football Complex to Paladin Stadium
Line up and cheer as the Paladins exit the Pearce Horton Football Complex and head to Paladin Stadium for the pre-game warm-up ahead of their meeting with Western Carolina.

2 p.m. Football Game vs. Western Carolina. Tickets $25-$40 (VIP). Call 864-294-3099.

7 p.m. Volleyball – Furman vs. The Citadel
Alley Gym. Tickets available at the game, $5.

8:15 p.m. 36th Annual Student Talent Showcase
Bring the entire family to see Furman students exhibit their talents and compete for prizes. General admissions tickets are $10 per person and are available at the door on a first-come, first-served basis. McAlister Auditorium. Hosted by Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.
