FUSAB hosts comedian Mike Birbiglia Sept. 7

Furman University will host comedian Mike Birbiglia on campus Thursday, Sept. 7, at 7 p.m. in McAlister Auditorium.

“An Evening with Mike Birbiglia,” is presented by Furman University Student Activities Board (FUSAB). His performance is open to the public. Tickets are $15 for the public and are available through Ticketmaster. Tickets are $5 for Furman students and faculty/staff with a valid ID, and are available at the FUSAB office.

Mike Birbiglia is a comedian, writer, actor and director known for his highly personal approach to comedy. Described as one of the busiest working comedians, he serves as creator, writer and star of the film Don’t Think Twice which was released in 2016.

He was recently seen in the fourth season of Netflix’s Orange is the New Black and Universal Pictures’ Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping. Birbiglia also recently completed a 100-city tour with his stand-up show, “Thank God for Jokes,” which he later parlayed into an Off-Broadway run at The Lynn Redgrave Theater.

Birbiglia came onto the scene in 2012 with his Sundance award-winning directorial debut Sleepwalk With Me. Birbiglia started as a stand-up comedian and has reached the height of his field—an international touring solo theater act, which blends elements of theater, film, storytelling, and stand-up comedy.

In recent years, his work has appeared on National Public Radio’s “This American Life,” where he began a collaboration with host and producer Ira Glass. Birbiglia’s first one-man show “Sleepwalk With Me” was presented by Broadway legend Nathan Lane. His second one-man show “My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend” won the Lucille Lortel Award for outstanding solo show and toured concert halls around the world.

His literary debut Sleepwalk with Me & Other Painfully True Stories was a New York Times best-seller and was a finalist for the Thurber Prize for American Humor.

As an actor, Birbiglia has appeared in Orange is the New Black and HBO’s Girls as well as in films Trainwreck, The Fault in Our Stars, Digging For Fire, Adult Beginners, Cedar Rapids, Going the Distance and Your Sister’s Sister.
