The idea of America

Furman Politics and International Affairs professor Akan Malici draws on his life experiences for an article he wrote for The Greenville News. Malici, a Turkish immigrant in Germany who later traveled to America as an exchange student, says, “The idea of America is indeed beautiful. It has to do with acceptance, inclusion, equality, opportunity, and justice. Yet, this idea of America is not always the reality of America. Native Americans know this, African Americans know this, Hispanics, Catholics, Jews, Muslims and many more know this. The task of American citizenship is to make the idea of America ever more the reality of America.”
