God and Faith References Prominent in Confederate Flag Emails to Haley

Among the 10,000 emails and letters Governor Nikki Haley received regarding the debate about the Confederate battle flag on Statehouse grounds, many included references to the Almighty. As reported by Schuyler Kropf of The Post and Courier, a number of the missives injected the words “God,” “Jesus,” “sin,” and the like. For the piece, Kropf interviewed Furman University religion professor David Fink who says the human tendency to add “extra gravity” by using religion-speak is a way of “upping the stakes.”
