Furman Rugby Coach John Roberts announced today that Clemson Rugby Coach Steve Lynch will join the coaching staff for the 2016 Furman Rugby Camp. Lynch joined the Tigers last year. He has also served as head coach of the Glendale Raptors and has extensive experience in all levels of rugby.
“We are extremely honored to have Coach Lynch join our staff,” said Coach Roberts. “I know our campers will benefit from his significant insight and fine coaching.”
As guest coach, Lynch will organize and manage training sessions, helping young players to master the basics of the game and explaining the nuances to more seasoned players. The camp will be held July 6-10.
“I am extremely excited to join the Southeast’s oldest and most established summer rugby camp,” said Lynch. “I am looking forward to playing an intensive, hands-on role there helping to equip our campers with the tools and ideas they need to become better players and teammates.”
Furman, a nationally ranked Div. II program, and Clemson, a nationally ranked DI program, are located just 45 miles apart. The programs have enjoyed a long-standing collaborative partnership and routinely conduct joint training sessions.
Founded in 2009, the Furman rugby camp is more than a rugby clinic. It is an experience. While learning from top coaches participants get a small sampling of college life. They enjoy living in the dorms and experience life on one of the most beautiful college campuses in the nation. They train in the Physical Activities Center, swim in our Olympic-sized pool and dine in Daniel Dining Hall.
Campers, too, benefit from Furman professors and varsity coaches who lead lectures on strength training, nutrition and game preparation.
Participants learn in a fun and competitive environment. Camp favorites include the traditional rugby Olympics, Rugby Jeopardy and creative team competitions.
