Josh hagerJosh Hager, a flanker and second row for Southern Pines High School, has accepted a rugby scholarship and will enroll at Furman University next fall.

Hager, son of Colonel (retired) William and Kelley Hager of Whispering Pines, N.C. 28327 is a two year starter for the Gators, one of the stronger high school programs in North Carolina.

“Josh has become a force at the breakdown and is leading our strong forward pack this year in tackles.  He is constantly in a position to make a play and it has been a pleasure to see him grow as a rugby player on and off the field,” said Gators Coach Robert Bortins. “I have no doubt that he will continue to work hard and make a positive impact at Furman both on the field and in the classroom.”

Hager will be part of Furman’s third scholarship class, the largest and most talented to date. Last fall, Furman captured the Southern Rugby Conference Title and ended the season ranked 6th in the nation.

“I’m extremely excited to not only be a part of such a well renown academic community but to also be a member of a championship team chasing a national title,” said Hager. I’m ready to come to Furman and give everything I have in the classroom and on the rugby field.”
