Furman names new alumni board members

The Furman University Alumni Office has named five new members to its board. The members are Joe Brewer, Deborah Carico, David Feild, Scott Graves, and Becky Sigmund.

The purpose of the Alumni Board is to provide support, guidance and leadership to the University; serve as a liaison group to represent the opinions, needs and interests of the entire alumni constituency; serve as guardians of Furman’s heritage, tradition and identity; promote ever-increasing involvement of alumni in the life of the University; serve as a model of participation in alumni activities and support of the fundraising efforts of the University; and serve as ambassadors for Furman by promoting the Furman message whenever possible.

A 1997 graduate, Joe Brewer is an attorney with the United States District Court. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Greenville Little League and is a member of Earle Street Baptist Church.  He has been a presenter at various regional and national events, including TEDxGreenville, The New Media Expo (NMX), Clemson University’s Center for Corporate Learning, and area universities and business. He lives in Greenville with his wife Susan Worley Brewer, who is also a 1997 Furman graduate, and their three children, Jackson, Hannah, and Lucy.

Deborah Carico

Deborah Harley Carico graduated from Furman University in 1985 with a bachelor’s in English. She is married to Tom Carico, also a 1985 Furman graduate. The Carico’s have three sons: Ben, a freshman at Furman; and Sam and David who attend Bishop England High School. A legacy alumna, Carico is the daughter of Furman graduates Jimmie Harley (’58) and Gayle Hudson Harley (’58) and the granddaughter of Furman graduates John Harold Hudson (’28) and Maude Hunter Hudson (’26). An English teacher for more nearly 20 years, Carico currently teaches AP English Literature & Composition at Wando High School in Mount Pleasant.

David M. Feild, Class of 1995, is President of Colliers International Greenville, a commercial real estate services firm. He and his wife Callie (Nix) Field, a 1997 Furman graduate, have two boys who attend Christ Church Episcopal School. Feild is also involved in the Greenville Chamber of Commerce and serves as a Director on the Greenville County United Way Palmetto Society Board.

Scott Graves

Scott Graves, Class of 1996 (Business Administration) is President and Chief Operating Officer of BlueChoice HealthPlan of South Carolina (Columbia) where he has been employed 16 years. He seeks to further his knowledge and abilities by participating in many professional training courses including the Darla Moore School of Business Executive Leadership program. He serves as President of the South Carolina Alliance of Health Plans, and is on the board of the South Carolina Association of Non-Profit Organizations. From 2009-2012 he was Board Chairman of Children’s Chance, a local charity that helps families dealing with Pediatric Cancer. Graves is a resident of Blythewood.

Rebecca Sigmund (’80, photo not available), is a Shareholder with Ogletree Deakins and, after 30 years practicing in Atlanta, she recently transferred to the firm’s Greenville office. She specializes in business immigration and advises companies and organizations on immigration alternatives for prospective employees. She has served on various boards of organizations serving children and immigrants including Catholic Charities and Childspring International. Sigmund was the recipient of the 2006 S. Phillip Heiner Award presented by the Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation for Community Pro Bono Services, among other honors. Her best friends and life supporters continue to be friends she made at Furman.
