Furman to hold summer commencement Aug. 16

Shirley Ritter, Professor of Education Emerita at Furman University, will serve as speaker when Furman holds its summer commencement exercises Saturday, Aug. 16 at 8 p.m. in McAlister Auditorium.

The university will award approximately 55 undergraduate and graduate degrees during commencement.  Furman president Elizabeth Davis will preside over the ceremony.

The public is invited to attend.

Ritter retired from the faculty following the 2013-14 academic year after 30 years of service to the university.  A graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, she holds a Masters of Educational Studies from the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia, and a Ph. D. from the University of Illinois.

Her area of specialty is special education, where she has championed effective teaching practices for all students.  She is past president of the Teacher Education Division, and she previously served as treasurer for the Division of Learning Disabilities of the International Council for Exceptional Children.
