Dr. Gilbert Allen

For nearly four decades, Furman English professor Gil Allen has been a teacher, writer and editor. His books include “Driving to Distraction,” “Second Chances,” and his most recent poetry collection, “Catma.” He enjoyed another career milestone this year when he was inducted into the South Carolina Academy of Authors. Now, after 37 years at Furman, Allen will retire at the end of the 2014-15 school year to spend more time writing and enjoying his other hobbies, such as gardening and traveling. The Greenville News recently caught up with Dr. Allen on the eve of his final year at Furman.
