Remembering the Normandy Invasion

Hours before the first Allied troops stormed the beaches of Normandy, Herb Crews was already well behind enemy lines. As crew chief of a C-47 military transport aircraft, Crews was assigned to drop 28 paratroopers near Sainte-Mère-Église, a strategically important town on the road to the port of Cherbourg. After the war, Crews returned to Furman—he had completed one semester before going into the service in 1943 —and graduated in 1949 with a degree in psychology. Read more in USA Today.
