Furman Board of Trustees meets Saturday

Read bios of Furman’s six new trustees

The Furman trustees approved promotions and/or tenure for 14 faculty members.

The Furman trustees approved promotions and/or tenure for 14 faculty members during its Saturday meeting.

During its spring meeting Saturday, the Furman University Board of Trustees approved promotions and/or tenure for 14 faculty members and heard that six new members will join the board this summer.

The trustees also recognized the contributions of nine board members whose terms will expire June 30.

Faculty members promoted to the rank of full Professor were Gregory Lewis (Biology), David Moffett (Physics) and Jay Oney (Theatre Arts).

Those professors receiving tenure were Omar Carmenates (Music), Echol Nix (Religion) and Maria Rippon (Modern Languages and Literatures).

Those receiving tenure and promoted to the rank of Associate Professor were Marianne Bessy (Modern Languages and Literatures), Nathaniel Cook (Economics), Jason Jones (Economics), Kenneth Kolb (Sociology), Michelle Horhota (Psychology), Aaron Simmons (Philosophy), Joni Tevis (English) and Dongming Zhang (Modern Languages and Literatures).

The board granted emeritus status to seven retiring professors—Kenneth Abernethy (Computer Science), Charles Brewer (Psychology), Jane Chew (Modern Languages and Literatures), Mary Jean Horney (Economics), Patricia Pecoy (Modern Languages and Literatures), Shirley Ritter (Education) and David Rutledge (Religion).

All promotions, tenure and emeritus status become effective Aug. 1.

Six new members will join the Furman Board of Trustees on July 1.  They are John Donald Anderson of Charlotte, N.C., Christopher R. Borch of Saratoga, Calif., Sean P. Hartness of Greenville, Susan T. Shi of Greenville, William R. Timmons, III of Greenville, and the Rev. Baxter M. Wynn of Greenville.  Hartness, Timmons and Wynn have served previous terms on the board.

The board recognized nine trustees whose terms will expire June 30.  They are Bob Buckman of Memphis, Tenn., Jordan Clark of Atlanta, Ga., Richard Cullen of Richmond, Va., Randy Eaddy of Winston-Salem, N.C., David Ellison of Greenville, Kathy McKinney of Greenville, Jim Ney of Marietta, Ga., Todd Ruppert of Owings Mills, Md., and Peace Sullivan of Miami Beach, Fla.
