Furman faculty to perform in Newberry Opera House March 24

Newberry chamberFurman University music faculty will present a chamber music concert Monday, March 24, at 8 p.m. in the historic Newberry Opera House, Newberry, S.C. A reception with the performers follows the concert.

As part of the Furman Music Department’s Partners in the Arts outreach initiative, the event is open to the public. Tickets are $15 for adults and $7.50 for students.

The program includes a selection of Felix Mendelssohn’s “Songs Without Words” arranged for clarinet, cello and piano, “Mallorca” by Isaac Albeniz, and a rare performance of “Capriccio for Piano and Winds” by Leos Janacek.

Also on the program are works by California-based composer Christopher Dobrian and noted Dutch minimalist Louis Andriessen. The internationally acclaimed duo runedako will present Dobrian’s “Upon Reflection” (2013), and a diverse quartet consisting of piano, guitar, marimba, and saxophone will present Andriessen’s aggressive masterpiece “Hout.”

Performers in the concert include Mark Britt, trombone; Omar Carmenates, marimba; Robert Chesebro, clarinet; Cynthia Hopkins, flute; Christopher Hutton, cello; Dan Koppelman, piano; Ruby Morgan, piano; Ruth Neville, piano; Matt Olson, saxophone; Steven Walter, guitar, Stephen Wilson, trombone; Richard deBondt, bass trombone; Michael Taylor, euphonium; and Craig King and Phil Elkins, trumpet. Furman’s Les Hicken conducts the Janacek piece.
