Andy Wallin couldn’t remember the last time the Upstate had been so cold, referring to the recent polar vortex-laced temperatures that hit the United States. “The weather makes it worse because it makes your (heating) unit work harder,” he said. “So it’s not good for your home.” Wallin, who serves a program coordinator for Furman’s Community Conservation Corps (CCC), should know. He helps people make their homes more energy efficient, not just for the winter but year-round. The Greenville News reported on the work of the CCC, which is housed at Furman’s David E. Shi Center for Sustainability and offers free weatherization assistance for qualifying homeowners.
