Herring Center hosts art show

“Many Horses in My Past” by Jane Todd Butcher

The Herring Center for Continuing Education at Furman University will host its inaugural community art show Sept. 5–Oct. 31 in the Herring Center’s Baiden Gallery on the Furman campus. A community reception honoring the artists will be held Monday, Sept. 9, 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. in the Manly Lobby of the center.

The Herring Center is open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Free and open to the public, the art show highlights work from accomplished visual art instructors for Learning for You and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI), and selected student participants from Bridges to a Brighter Future.

Both OLLI and Learning for You promote personal development and lifelong learning. Together, the programs will offer more than 200 classes this fall covering a wide range of topics.

Bridges to a Brighter Future is a college access and success program for Greenville County high school students whose potential outdistances their circumstances. During the Bridges 2013 summer residential program, several students participated in an elective photography class with instructor Kelly Godwin.

The art show gives the community an opportunity to visit the Herring Center, home to OLLI, Learning for You, and Bridges to a Brighter Future. The Herring Center is also headquarters for two other divisions of Furman’s Continuing Education, Undergraduate Evening Studies, and Corporate & Professional Development. In all, Furman’s Continuing Education department serves more than 3,500 Upstate students annually.
