Furman Modern Languages and Literatures professor Stephanie Knouse has received recognition from the United Way of Greenville County, and has published an article in Foreign Language Annals.

In a recent awards ceremony and dinner sponsored by the United Way of Greenville County, Knouse was named a “Mentor of the Year Honoree.” Of the four finalists, one received the Mentor of the Year award. Knouse was one of about a dozen honorees, most of those representing national and international industries. Only a few of the nominees were connected to the field of education.

Knouse’s work has been published in the latest issue (45 (4): 512-542) of Foreign Language Annals, the research journal of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. Her article, “The Acquisition of Dialectal Phonemes in a Study-Abroad Context: The Case of the Castilian Theta,” underwent three levels of rigorous review before appearing in the peer-reviewed journal.

An assistant Spanish professor, Knouse joined Furman in 2009. Her academic interests are Spanish sociolinguistics, language variation and change, technology in foreign language education, foreign language pedagogy, and second language acquisition. She holds a bachelor’s from Towson University, a master’s from Middlebury College and a doctorate from the University of Florida.
