President Smolla discusses the law
Rod Smolla
Furman president Rod Smolla, one of the country’s top legal scholars, was interviewed by the Greenville law firm of Gallivan, White and Boyd, P.A. In addition to talking about civility in the legal profession and his varied First Amendment scholarship and litigation, Smolla talked about Furman and the importance of a liberal arts education. The interview was published in two parts on the firm’s website.
Smolla is one of America’s foremost experts on issues relating to freedom of speech, academic freedom and freedom of the press. A native of the Chicago area, he is a 1975 graduate of Yale University and graduated first in his class from Duke University Law School in 1978. Prior to coming to Furman as president in 2010, he served as dean of the law schools at both Washington and Lee and the University of Richmond.
