Professor Robert Bullard to speak about environmental, social justice Oct. 18

GREENVILLE, S.C.—Robert Bullard, often described as the father of environmental justice, will speak Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. in Johns Hall 101 on the Furman campus.

His talk will focus on the interrelationships among environmental sustainability, human equality and social justice. Bullard’s presentation is free and open to the public, and is sponsored by Furman’s David E. Shi Center for Sustainability. The event is presented as part of the Arthur Vinings Davis Sustainability Speaker Series, and is included in Furman’s Cultural Life Program.

Bullard is the Edmund Asa Ware Distinguished Professor of Sociology and director of the Environmental Justice Resource Center at Clark Atlanta University. He is known for leading the battle for environmental justice, from dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina to curbing urban sprawl.

Bullard tells the stories of people on the frontline who are fighting to control environmental and human rights abuses. His research and activism challenge government and industry policies that place people of color and the poor at special risk. He is author of 15 books including Race, Place, and Environmental Justice After Hurricane Katrina: Struggles to Reclaim, Rebuild, and Revitalize New Orleans and the Gulf Coast (Westview Press, 2009).
