Art department chair Ross McClain delivers the L.D. Johnson Lecture on “What Really Matters?” Nov. 15

McClain will deliver the L.D. Johnson Memorial Lecture, “What Really Matters?” His CLP talk is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the Furman Office of Spiritual Life.

The L.D. Johnson Lecture Series was established to honor the life and work of the late L.D. Johnson, Chaplain at Furman from 1967 to 1981.

The L.D. Johnson endowed lecture has engaged the Furman and Greenville communities since 1982 with the question, “What really matters?”—a question often posed by the late chaplain, and one that serves as the backdrop for a lecture and conversation about the cultural issues of our time.

McClain will address the question from the perspective of an artist and how that informs a cultural view of what matters in the world and in life.

Since joining the faculty in 1999, McClain has taught all levels of graphic design, brand identity, and strategy. He maintains an active professional presence and is an advocate of design as a medium and a tool to tell stories through the mindset of empathy.

As chair of the art department, McClain has eliminated barriers that previously existed in the visual arts to foster a broader connection within the liberal arts at the university. He believes the true mission of fine arts at a liberal arts institution is to reestablish itself as a beacon of creativity, inspiration, mindfulness, resilience and curiosity.

A graduate of Western Kentucky University with a bachelor’s in advertising and graphic design, McClain completed graduate work in design at the University of Iowa, earning M.A. (1998) and M.F.A. (1999) degrees.
