Furman University has announced that it will offer a Master of Arts in Strategic Design (MA-SDG) through a collaboration with the Miami Ad School @ Portfolio Center in Atlanta.

Furman is currently accepting applications for the program, and online registration is available here. Classes will begin in June of this year.

The new master’s degree is an 18-month, five-semester program that provides an advanced understanding of art and communication theory applied through a portfolio school model. The MA-SDG program replicates the creative professional environment, giving graduates practical experience, a portfolio, and a network of industry contacts to propel them into creative careers.

The first summer term at Furman focuses on typography, communication and composition, and design thinking.

Three of the remaining four terms will be housed at the partner location, Miami Ad School @ Portfolio Center (MAS-PC) in Atlanta, with courses supervised onsite and remotely by the Furman program director.

The final practicum term will be held at Furman or based on practicum placement either at MAS-PC or in the industry. Twenty-two of the proposed 42 credits in the program will be taught, directed or supervised by Furman faculty.

The Atlanta-based MAS-PC courses will focus on creative and strategic thinking, design and design narratives, content and content creation, and a portfolio and practicum component. Some terms will have a reflection/vision point component led online by Furman faculty with guest seminar speakers from leaders in the advertising/design world.
