Furman Alum Helps Syrian Refugees

For Sami Alkoutami ’16 and his family, Syria is more than a story in the news.  It is Alkoutami’s ancestral home and from where his father, Dr. Ghassan Alkoutami, moved to the United States in the 1980s to finish his medical training. While the family’s home is in Hickory, N.C., they visited Syria every year until 2011 and the start of a civil war in the country. Alkoutami just graduated from Furman with a biology degree and a goal of going to medical school, but he spent part of his summer, along with his mother and sister, at a refugee camp in Jordan helping any way he could.
