stumpfJohn Stumpf, a fullback and flyhalf who has played rugby since he was three-years old, will enroll at Furman University in August and join the Paladin rugby team.

Stumpf, a student at Gill St. Bernards School (Gladstone, NJ) is a member of the Morris U19 team and the New Jersey Blaze, a 7s team. Stumpf, 6’3, 170 pounds,  served as captain of the New Jersey All-State U17 team his sophomore year. Last year, he was a member of the New Jersey All-State U-19 team.

Stumpf began playing rugby in pre-school and has played tackle rugby for 8 years. He, too, kicks for touch.

“John is a great fit for our university and team,” said Furman Coach John Roberts. “His experience and athleticism will be a welcome addition to our squad. In the coming years we will be making a hard push into 7s and I know that John’s skills will be especially helpful in this area.”

“It’s a dream come true to be able to play the sport I love at a very competitive college level,” says Stumpf. “The fact that it’s happening at Furman is even better. I am truly grateful to be a Paladin.”
