Paintings by Sarah Schuster will be on display Oct. 9 through Nov. 1 at Thompson Gallery in the Roe Art Building on the Furman campus. Thompson Gallery hours are 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. A reception and gallery talk by Schuster is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 24 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Roe Art Building.

Schuster’s exhibition, “Descent,” is free and open to the public.

In “Descent,” Schuster attempts to convey the various meanings the word carries:  a downward motion, a person’s ancestral lineage, a moral decline, or an attack or uprising in the reconfiguration of established social and political norms. Schuster uses images from the Gulf oil spill disaster as source material. She says the spill is a metaphor for the cycle of creation and destruction – an essential pattern in the natural world and integral to the process of painting.

Schuster is associate professor of studio art at Oberlin College (Oberlin, Ohio) where she began teaching in 1988. Born and raised in Boston, Mass., Schuster attended Boston University as an undergraduate. There she received classical training in drawing and painting from the figure as well as rigorous technical instruction in anatomy and traditional painting techniques. Schuster holds an MFA from Yale University.
