The Furman Rugby Camp wrapped up its fifth annual camp this week with players from as far away as South Africa, Canada and San Diego participating.

Furman head coach John Roberts directed the camp. Coaches included Darren Scott (Furman backs coach), Chuck Wurl (head coach for UNC-Greensboro) and Pat Reid (head coach for Greenville High School).

The thirty-two participating campers attended lectures on how to the balance school work and athletics and IRB law changes. They also enjoyed the Furman pool and rugby-related athletic games.

The team competition, a staple of the Furman Camp, was won by the Sharks who edged out the Lions during Saturday’s Rugby Olympic Games.

“We had a fantastic camp,” said Roberts. “As usual we focused on fostering a fun learning environment. We want the campers to enjoy each other, make new friends and collect a few skills that they can take back to their home club.”

Campers Carlos Cabanilas (Kennesaw), Sidney Shoop (Chapel Hill) and Longinus Nnodium (Greenville) were named camper of the day. Mac Ellington (Concord) received the most improved award while Tommy Willardson (Chapel Hill) was the camper MVP.
