The menace of violence in America
The school shootings in Sandy Hook, Conn., occurred in a community that was “not the kind of place something like this can happen.” But, according to Furman communication studies professor Sean O’Rourke, it is becoming increasingly apparent there is no place in the United States where something like this cannot happen. In an op-ed for The Greenville News, O’Rourke writes that unless we remove the thread of violence from the fabric of our national life, we will be collectively responsible for the tragic deaths still to come.
